The "iPhone" is the name commonly used by the Mac-centric community for the widely and long rumoured phone by Apple.

But "iPhone" is also a trademark originally owned by Linksys, a consumer network equipment maker, purchased by Cisco, the giant networks and telecom equipment maker in 2003.

So today the iPhone is officially announced, it's a phone, it uses the latest telecomunications technology such as Voice over IP but it's not from Apple.

Analysts and Apple-centric sites initially started calling the rumoured Apple mobile phone "iPhone" when tipsters discovered that the www.iphone.org domain was registered by Apple.
