Although Apple initiated and now has finished its transition to the x86 architecture hands in hands with Intel, ignoring AMD's efforts and successes in the processors market so far, a report is now claiming that Apple might be developing an AMD laptop, probably due for 2007. The claims are based on the fact Apple has considerably increased its orders for a certain type of components (MLCC-22µF), usually used to develop AMD-based laptop architectures. The report also says that Apple could also use AMD chips for its servers line-up. Such claims can be considered as more likely, as AMD has strong and growing market share of over 20% in server chips and should offer great price/performance in 2007. In September, AMD's CEO, Hector Ruiz, told to the press that Apple would eventually switch to AMD in the future. However, Apple has never confirmed such claims which were rather seen as provocation at that time. Bookmark/Search this post with:

Well of course Apple is

The question is if Apple is going to be developing a laptop with their brand on it that will have an AMD processor in it...
I meant "an AMD laptop"

MLCC-22µF is a capacitor -
Submitted by Mart (not verified) on Thu, 2006-11-16 15:31.MLCC-22µF is a capacitor - we're surmising an AMD-based Apple laptop based on a capacitor???
What if that "laptop" is
Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Sat, 2006-11-18 17:19.What if that "laptop" is actually the iTV? It has to be entering production if Jobs plans to unveil it in January. Using an AMD chip in iTV would not ruffle intel too badly since technically it's not a computer.

22uf capacitors hang off AMD chips all over commercial AMD logic boards. But 22uF capacitors hang off quite a few Intel chips, too. They're popular as noise suppressors on a range of circuits. ;-)
The iTV will probably use
Submitted by Brandon Martinez (not verified) on Wed, 2006-11-29 20:59.The iTV will probably use the Intel VIIV technology - since that is Intel's media architecture.
