Tipsters informed MacScoop that Apple is planning to use HDMI technology in its next generation of Cinema Displays, while another recent vague report claims that a larger than 30 inch model could also be on the way.

Back in August, MacScoop had first received a report claiming that Apple would replace its 23 inch Cinema Display with a 24 inch sized model and that the HDMI technology would be used in all of its display's line-up.

This report had been published as "unconfirmed information" in our WWDC 2006 rumor roundup and has since been partially confirmed by some hints Apple has provided with the announcement of the iMac 24 inch and the "iTV" which is said to include an HDMI port.

Recent reports informed MacScoop that the next generation of Apple's displays line-up would include both HDMI connector and the HDCP technology, allowing copy-protected HD content to be displayed.

As for built-in iSight and Front Row, while the inclusion of an iSight was mentioned in one of our reports, there was no confirmation on the built-in Front Row Receiver/Remote feature.

Another vague report that remains to be verified is claiming that Apple could even introduce a larger model in 2007. No more details were provided though. Apple's largest display in the current line-up is the 30 inch model.

We have no information about pricing but we don't expect the company to increase its pricing because of these new features. However, we expect that Apple will release this new display line-up in January 2007 during MacWorld SF along with the "iTV" living room appliance announced in September.

Several other reports previously claimed that Apple would add iSight and Front Row to its displays line-up while older reports mainly corroborated by analysts have been speculating on larger Cinema Displays for a while. Additionally, a recent MacRumors report claims that Apple will release new display line-up with built-in iSights during MacWorld SF.

Apple hasn't made any major update on its Cinema Displays line-up since June 2004. Only some quiet updates on the specs where noticed.

iTV + large HDMI Cinema

iTV + large HDMI Cinema Display would be awesome...

but how much will that cost?

As I have a 23" Aluminum HD

As I have a 23" Aluminum HD Display, I'm psyched to see what the next line-up will include. However I'm also a little bummed as I spent almost $2,000 on this monitor when they first came out in '04. If the new displays are priced that high again, I'm thinking I might pass, especially when $2,000+ can get you a sweet 42" plasma or LCD tv with HDMI and DVI inputs. Love everything Apple, but they need to re-think their price points...

Apple isn't pushing HDMI for

Apple isn't pushing HDMI for computer connections, it will only be on the iTV (for the living room).

Apple is heavily pushing UDI for computers and computer displays.

You should note that there

You should note that there are no iSights for sale anymore on the Apple website. Is there a new version coming out or will they be made moot by new displays?

I'm hearing HDMI+Apple in

I'm hearing HDMI+Apple in the same sentence, this points to one GLARING conclusion!! Apple are working on HDTV's. The cinema displays are computer screens, TV's are a different animal. And Apple is now involved in Movies and the living room, next logical step, much like the iPhone, is the Apple TV. Just makes sense you people..

I do hope these source are

I do hope these source are accurate. HDMI will be needed by anyone that wants to make use of copyrighted/copyprotected movies in the future. Since I'm really am hoping that Apple has gotten it relative to HTPC's, some sort of fully supported HDMI display will be required.

It is either that or the company comes up with its own interface and copy protection mechanism. We all know how Apple has screwed up proprietary standards in the past.

At this point in time it is silly to even consider display hardware that isn't HDMI compliant. At least if there is any thought at all of playing commercial video on the units.

HDMI supports video AND

HDMI supports video AND audio. Why would the display want to support audio unless it has built in speakers?

Maybe for the iSight's mike?

Maybe for the iSight's mike? :)

I sincerely hope you're

I sincerely hope you're kidding. the HDMI port's audio would be going TO the screen, remember? Unless you're implying that the built-in iSight is sending video to the computer via HDMI, meaning the iSight is hi-def. which will will really add a lot to that video chat.

Also, microphone is abbreviated as "Mic"

Apple's displays are very

Apple's displays are very nice, but you can get the same screens from other manufacturers at much lower cost with more features.

For example, the 23" Cinema Display uses an LCD by LG, the same one used in the HP L2335 23" LCD monitor. The HP, though, is much cheaper (or was, I think it's been discontinued recently) and includes a tilting, swiveling, and pivoting base, Component, Composite, S-Video, VGA and DVI inputs. The apple screen is exactly the same (and actually looks just like the HP besides the base) but only tilts and only has DVI.

Apple, if they are going to sell a TV/Monitor hybrid, had better sell it for a reasonable price. You can buy a 52" TV from Sharp right now that accepts 1080p60 and can be had for under $3700.

I will add to this that

I will add to this that there is an upcoming spec for HDMI that includes a SMALLER CONNECTOR, and I would not be surprised to see Apple use this, especially on small monitors and... new laptops.

Even the MacBooks have

Even the MacBooks have digital video output via a mini-style DVI connector. So why would a computer monitor need an HDMI connector? Only if you want to use it as as a dual use monitor to also monitor digital video from HD sources, which would be an HDMI connector from that equipment, such as DVD players and the Apple iTV. Makes since to stay with the same connector even if the monitor is not used for audio. Many projects have HDMI connectors even thought no one is likely to be using the small speaker in a projector as apposed to a quality surround sound system. HDMI is used for compatibility and ease of setup, even just for video.

Dual use is the only justification since there would not much of a reason to buy an Apple HD monitor just to use for HD movies or TV when you can get those for much less money. An HDMI connector would also make it significantly more expensive since a licensing fee has to be paid for each unit manufacture.

So there are many issues for Apple to determine what connectors are used for which monitors and obviously that is probably what Apple has been doing a lot of thinking about in a new line of monitors. So even Apple may not know what they will do until the last possible time before freezing a design for manufacturing.
