The latest generation iMacs, including the all new 24 inch model are reportedly suspected to include a 802.11n compatible wireless chip. When users tried to boot the latest Release Candidate of Microsoft Windows Vista on their new iMac, the system has detected a Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter. 802.11n is the non-ratified yet successor of 802.11a, b and g which could theorically reach a maximum bandwidth of 540Mbps. Apple has been an early adopter of wifi-based wireless. It was the first company to make its laptops wifi ready with the first iBook which was released in 1999. It was also among the first companies to use the 54Mbps 802.11g technology. Additionally, when Apple introduced the iTV on September the 12th, it did not precisely mentioned which exact wireless protocol will be used for it and refered to the technology as "802.11". Apple has not officially announced any support for the 802.11n protocol and Mac OS X lacks a driver to support it. Meanwhile, this gives us hope that Apple will also bring support for the new protocol on its forthcoming laptops. Bookmark/Search this post with:
