Apple has filed the trademark "Numbers" on June the 8th, as notices AppleInsider. The description of the trademark is "computer software".

It's sounds obvious that such a trademark could be used for a spreadsheet software that has been rumoured for a while. It's actually one of the first rumours we had published back in 2002.

Since that time, while Apple released Keynote then Pages and the iWork suite, no official confirmation came, except for some interesting clues that readers sent us.
